The Harbourview Bed & Breakfast is a great place to stay; three spacious and comfortable ground-floor bedrooms, two with their own deck, a sub-tropical garden with swimming pool and BBQ, with breakfasts served in the upstairs lounge, or outside on the deck - all with incredible views over the ever-changing tidal Harbour to Mount Paku.
And it’s the perfect location for exploring. The world famous Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are just 30 minutes away; Whitianga are 40 minutes' drive and Coromandel Town 75. Though please note, following the 2023 cyclone, that the main route from Auckland to Tairua, the SH25A, is currently closed. It is scheduled to reopen by March 2024 (though progress so far suggests it will be sooner). Check here for updates, but until then please allow an extra hour to get here from/to Auckland.
Tairua is a treasure too. The long, dune-backed ocean beach rivals any on the Pacific coast and is famed for its magnificent surf and golden sand. Mount Paku dominates the horizon as well as offering amazing views from the summit. There’s a thriving community, with excellent restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops, lots of great walks and cycle tracks, picnic spots, a golf course – and year-round fishing. Harborview is just five minutes' walk from the town centre and a short drive or walk to the ocean beach.
