Tairua
means twin tides/two harbours. It is a small seaside resort and fishing
village with a harbour linked by two sandy white beaches. Paku , a twin-coned
pa sculptured hillside that was once an island is joined by a sand dune
and stands at the harbour heads. Situated on the Coromandel Peninsula’s
east coast Tairua is a favourite holiday resort for many New Zealanders.
There is a small shopping village with restaurants and most tourist
facilities.
Hot Water Beach
20 mins north from Tairua you will find the famous and fascinating Hot
Water Beach.
Two hours wither side of low tide, you can dig your very own hot pool
in the sand right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
Cathedral Cove & Hahei
20 Mins north of Tairua you will find the attractive beach of Hahei
named after the Maori chief Hei. From the lookout there is access to
Cathedral Cove, which is an impressive coastal arch, formed by the linking
of sea caves beneath a headland.
Glow Worm Tunnel
There are some great bush walks including a walk through the 500m glowworm
tunnel to old goldmine workings.
Fishing & Diving
For the fishing and diving enthusiast there are trips available most
days as well as charter and hire boats. Fishing and diving equipment
is available for hire.
Golf Courses
Tairua has its own 18 hole golf course and numerous others only a short
distance away.
Restaurants
A five to ten minute level walk will take you to local restaurants in
the village. while a short ferry ride will take you to several more.
